In the early hours of today, we lost a great parliamentarian.
Incarnadine co-founder Alan Howarth, Lord Howarth of Newport, was the first MP to cross the floor from the Conservatives to Labour, disillusioned with neoliberalism. In the House of Lords, he made thoughtful contributions on a wide range of issues, not least creative health. Alan was modest, kind, loyal, conscientious and unswayed by prevailing winds. This photograph was taken last week and shows his determination to inscribe copies of his memoir for his parliamentary colleagues. We certainly didn’t agree on everything politically, but we enjoyed a great many mutually respectful discussions, based on deep consideration of the issues at stake. He will be greatly missed.
